EXCERPTS

About 200 daycare workers have joined the P.E.I. Union of Public Sector Employees in hopes of getting better wages.

People working in the field of early childhood education often have a college or university education but still make less than $9 an hour.

There are about 400 child care workers on the Island.

The federal government promised $5 billion for a national child care program to be distributed over the next 5 years. Workers are hoping some of this money can be used to increase wages.

"Really it started from a meeting with early childhood educators," says UPSE president Sandy MacKay. "They could see and employers could see that we're losing good staff because we can't afford to pay them."
