A Conservative election victory would kill the creation of 1,800 daycare spaces in some of Toronto's poorest neighbourhoods, says Mayor David Miller.
"The (Conservative) platform on childcare is terrible. There's no way to put that except that it's terrible," Miller said yesterday.
The Liberals included a $5-billion, five-year national daycare plan in last year's budget. They promise that if re-elected, they'll make that program permanent and earmark at least an additional $6 billion to keep it going until 2015.
The Conservatives promise $1,200 a year to parents for each child under 6, regardless of a family's arrangements. The Tories say they would honour commitments made under the Liberal daycare initiative for the first year.
"We are about to have 1,800 new childcare spaces this year in the neighbourhoods in Toronto that need them the most" said Miller.
"And those spaces can't open because they are going to cancel the plan."
