EXCERPTS

New spaces will be created for day care, but not nearly as many as previously planned.

The Keewatin-Patricia District School along with the Kenora District Services Board have decided to go ahead with the Best Start program on a reduced scale. The board is currently reviewing its capital funding allotment and is devising a new plan to help make the program last longer.

Lakewood is going to have renovations made to incorporate 20 new day care spaces into the school. It will be located in a designated kindergarten classroom area on the lower level of the school. In the original Best Start program plans, Evergreen School was also slated to have renovations to include a day care facility.

The downscaling move comes after long-term day care funding was axed by the new federal Conservative government and replaced with a child care allowance. This allowance will grant parents $1,200 a year for each child under the age of six.

All costs for the project will be covered under the Kenora District Services Board as it is administering the program.

No dates have been set as to when the program will start or when construction is slated to begin.
