Former prime minister Paul Martin spoke today in the House of Commons for the first time since leading the federal Liberals to an election loss Jan. 23 and stepping down as party leader.

The former prime minister was addressing the Conservative government child-care proposals.
He said families need whatever support they can get, but he called the Tory plan to abandon Liberal child-care initiatives "perverse thinking" laced with "tactical elegance."
Martin questioned whether the Tory plan to pay parents $1,200 a year for each child under six is truly fair and whether it provides real choice to working parents.
He says the scheme is flawed by "deep inequities" that will take money out of the pockets of the working poor for the benefit of better-off Canadians.
