EXCERPTS

Members of Ottawa's francophone community showed up to a mayoral child-care debate last night with one simple message: we're not equal.

Francophones make up almost 15 per cent of Ottawa's population, however, they only make up 11 per cent of the subsidized child-care spaces in the city.

The news came as a shock to several mayoral candidates, including Larry O'Brien and Piotr Anweiler, who admitted they did not know about the inequality.

Alex Munter, however, was quick to point out that francophone children deserve to be placed in francophone child care and, if elected mayor, he would support a "catch-up" plan that seeks to equalize the number of spaces based upon population figures.

Mayor Bob Chiarelli did not attend last night's child-care debate. He has previously supported the "catch-up" plan.
