The Alberta government has promised 14 000 new child care spaces by 2011. It says it has created more than 9000 so far.
But critics complain government is not counting spaces lost to grant shortfalls and even if the target is met it still won't be nearly enough to meet demand. Alberta child care advocates are calling for more funding, better standards of care and more spaces for younger children.
Is our province doing enough to help create accessible child care for Alberta families? Is good quality care affordable? And could Alberta's child care crunch put kids at risk?
