EXCERPTS

The new modular classrooms being constructed in B.C. to accommodate an influx next fall of full-day kindergarten students got a thumbs up today from parents touring a prototype.

"They look pretty amazing compared to the portables we had when we were growing up," said Sheri Williams, who attended the news event at Shelter Industries in Aldergrove with her daughter Jolene, a kindergarten student.

"It's nice and bright."

Added parent Tracey Munday: "It's nice. It looks like a real classroom."

The Education Ministry is showing off the new modular classroom for the first time at an event with Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid and Langley MLA Mary Polak.

The bright colours, high ceilings and natural lighting "will provide a healthy, nurturing place for elementary students," the ministry said in a release.

A total of 138 classrooms will be distributed to 25 school district starting at the end of this month with the first one going to New Westminster.

Construction will finish and the classrooms will be delivered to schools by September, when full-time kindergarten becomes available for all five-year-olds for the first time in B.C.
