TORONTO - Parents were camped outside of Howard Junior Public School Monday morning with the hopes of securing a spot in its daycare program.
Lineups began as early as late Sunday night, as the west-end school - known for its French immersion dual-track offering - only had 10 daycare spots left in its program, four of which were reserved for siblings of students already enrolled in the daycare program.
Registration for the Howard Park Children's Centre program began at 7:30 a.m. and all six spots were quickly filled, leaving the rest of the parents to be put onto a waiting list.
Nancy Carr, who spent the night in line to register, told Global News that she left the school disgruntled as she was placed first on the waiting list.
"I'm a little bit disappointed, but I'm hopeful that we'll get into the program in the next year or two."
Ula Ubani, a parent on the board of directors at Howard Junior Public School, says that childcare spaces are not uncommon.
"The issue of childcare spaces is not unique to Howard Park Children's Centre, it's all over this Ward and all over the city. People get on waiting lists and we do the best to accommodate."
Ubani had to endure this process for her child three years ago.
