CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – It has been a dozen years and three government mandates since the province of P.E.I. last did a comprehensive review of the Employment Standards Act, and the P.E.I. Working Group for a Liveable Income says it’s time for that review.

The group is hosting a media conference on Tuesday morning calling on government to initiate a full-scale review of employment standards in the province.

The Employment Standards Act sets minimum workplace standards for non-unionized workers.

During the conference members of the Working Group will speak on a range of employment rights and standards, including:

- Migrant workers
- Employees with disabilities
- Gender issues to take into account (domestic violence leave, childcare and caregiving, workplace sexual harassment, and maternity and parental leave).
- Those in attendance can address questions on the employment standards for their specific clientele.

Since the last review there has been a rapid redefinition of work in the Island economy, which impacted all aspects of life for Islanders.

The Working Group wants all Islanders to have an opportunity to contribute to the updates to this legislation.

The media conference will take place at Room 207, Murphy’s Community Centre, located at 200 Richmond St. in Charlottetown, on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Guest speakers include:

- Action team on Migrant Workers Rights
- P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women
- Women’s Network P.E.I.
- Advocates with people with Disabilities.
