EXCERPTS:

A new petition is pushing for daycares in Ontario to start a ‘Safe Arrival’ policy and call parents when a child is absent.

Whitby mom Alicia Wilson started the petition and says if this was in place, Everett Smith, 2, who was forgotten in family vehicle in Bancroft last month, may still be alive.

“My overall goal is to help protect children, protect children here in Ontario and their families and our communities from this terrible tragedy from happening again,” Wilson said.

Most school boards, including the DDSB, already have this in place if a child doesn’t show up to class.

“What my hope is, is that the daycares in our province will adapt this and start having to call families or caregivers if their child doesn’t attend the daycare when they’re supposed to be,” said Wilson.

She has reached out to Education Minister Stephen Lecce and Whitby MPP Lorne Coe about the petition.
