A Lumby childcare facility announced in 2023 has been scrapped to allow for a bigger, better facility to be built.
The province announced $2.16 million, with support from the feds, for a Lumby childcare facility in June 2023 aiming to open 54 childcare spaces. On Monday, the province announced $11.5 million in funding for a new project to create 103 childcare spaces in Lumby.
“The funding for the Regional District of North Okanagan announced in 2023 was withdrawn by the regional district to allow for a better result for the community in partnership with School District 22,” said the Ministry of Education in an email.
“Vernon School District (SD 22) then submitted a new application for a larger project to create 103 spaces, which was successful.”
The new 103-space centre has received $11.5 million in funding from the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund. It's supported by provincial investments and federal funding under the 2021-22 to 2025-26 Canada-British Columbia Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.
School District 22 says the facility is expected to be completed sometime in 2026. Details about enrolment and applications will be released closer to the facility's completion.
