The Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) program is run through Durham Continuing Education, which is a part of the Durham District School Board (DDSB).
For the past 25 years they have been offering free on-site childminding services for newcomers attending English language classes.
Workers at CNC in Pickering have been told the program will be closing in June 2025.
Nine employees, represented by CUPE 218, will be laid off.
“The women and children will suffer the most,” said CUPE 218 President Carrie Boisvert. “Many of the women who access these services will not be able to continue taking English language classes without being able to access the CNC program. And the children will not have access to this incredible learning environment before they reach the mainstream public school system.”
