Parents that rely on a child care program shouldn't be surprised if they have to pay more for the service if the next federal government won't honor the new five year funding agreement on Early Learning and Child Care with the Government of Manitoba.
The operating costs of publicly funded child care programs are subsidized by provincial and federal governments. "If federal dollars are withdrawn and re-routed directly to parents in the form of a child care allowance, the majority of public child care programs could lose many thousands of dollars that they need to pay staff, rent, purchase food, toys, and equipment", said Karen Ohlson, President of the Manitoba Child Care Association. "That revenue shortfall will have to come from somewhere else, and the most logical place is directly from parents out of the proposed child care allowance", she continued.
