This year, Sharon Hope Irwin of Cape Breton, founder of Specialink - The National Centre for Child Care Inclusion, received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Winnipeg, now Specialink's home. As introduction to the conferring of the degree, the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, President of The University of Winnipeg, who as Minister of Human Resources Canada in the 1990s was himself a vigorous child care champion, noted Sharon's outstanding contribution both to the child care movement and to families and children. The Childcare Resource and Research Unit and the broader child care community congratulate Sharon and the U of W. The text of Sharon Irwin's speech to the Spring 2008 graduating class is available through the link above.
