ABOUT THE SUMMER INSTITUTE:

The occupational standards describe the core knowledge and skills administrators, managers, directors and supervisors need to do their job effectively. They represent best practices in the administration of early childhood settings.

Child Care Human Resources Sector Council Executive Director, Diana Carter will introduce the occupational standards for childcare administrators.
Students will exchange perspectives on a broad range of issues relating to the judgments, knowledge and skills needed for leadership in the Early Childhood Education field. Students will gain information and skills through in-class discussions, videos and presentations, reporting on experiences gained through their own experiences as well as by guest speakers who are specialists in such areas as: Governance, Finance, Family and Community Relations, Human Resource Management, Licensing and Regulation, Labour Relations, Pedagogy and Early Childhood Educator Professionalism.

PARTICIPANTS:

The target audience will be current and future child care leaders and administrators, post secondary trainers and government licensing specialists, current students as well as alumni Bachelor of Arts, Developmental Studies and/or Advanced Diploma in Leadership in Early Childhood Care and Education. Participants may elect to take this Institute for university credit or for interest/audit.

Dr. Susan Prentice will present highlights of her just-released research on the economic and social impact of child care specific to three rural and northern Manitoba communities. Community leaders will respond and share their experience of how child care has been an asset to their community or region.

The 17th EECERA Annual Conference will explore the work of the renowned Belarussian developmental psychologist Lev Vygotsky and the impact of his ideas on current research and practice worldwide.

Organized by the European Early Childhood Education Research Association in collaboration with the International Step by Step Association, the conference welcomes proposals and interested participants from Eastern and Western Europe and from around the globe.

As Vygotsky's theories moved from the East to the West, they were understood and applied differently in different contexts, countries, and cultures. The conference symbol of branches growing and blossoming represents the varied paths ideas take and their realization over time.

Research reports - Public talk - Workshop

Description:

The Child Care Coalition of Manitoba's new research reports on the economic and social impact of childcare in Parkland, Thompson and St.-Pierre-Jolys will be released in late April. As part of their release, we are organizing a public policy workshop and talk.

"Reframing Childcare as Economic Development: Exploring The Theory, Method, Practice and Strategy of Economic Impact Studies" is the title of a one-day public policy workshop, being held on Monday, April 23, at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg. Dr. Mildred Warner, of Cornell University, will be speaking on American evidence about the economic impact of childcare, and the potential of economic development research to increase public will to invest in services. Also presenting is Dr. Susan Prentice, who will launch the Child Care Coalition's new research reports on the economic and social impact of childcare in Parkland, Thompson and Saint-Pierre-Jolys.

On Tuesday, April 24, Dr. Warner will speak on "Reframing Childcare as Economic Development: New Directions for Research and Advocacy," at 7 pm, at Eckhart-Grammate Hall at the University of Winnipeg. Come and hear this leading American expert, then join us for a participatory Q & A followed by coffee and cookies. All welcome!
